For the first time in the 2016 campaign, The Dalles ski team hit the slopes at Timberline Lodge for a Mount Hood League slalom race under pristine conditions.
“We have had a very productive preseason of training and the kids were all fired up about this first race,” said TD head coach Jeff Cordell.
Chris Montecalvo paced the Riverhawk boys’ team with a two-run time of one minute and 48.02 seconds to secure 23rd place in the standings.
Liam Brewer added a 1:48.39 for 24th place, and James Pashek crossed the line twice in 31st place with a mark of 2:04.61.
Ethan Martin (2:04.61) was the only other TD skier to complete two turns, as Preston Klindt (43.48) and Martin Carter (44.28) either crashed or hiked on one try.
Those times garnered TD fourth place in the standings with a total of 5:13.29.
Hood River Valley, led by Montana Kurahara (1:11.44) finished in first place with a combined 3:50.29.
Cleveland (4:20.28), Sandy (4:39.22) and Grant (5:16.52) rounded out the order of finish.
Louis Red Cloud, representing Dufur High School as an individual, added a time of 1:48.62 to capture 26th place.
Robin Pashek led the TD girls’ team in 24th place with times of 53.40 and 58.79 for her 1:52.19.
Petra van Kessel added a 2:01.01 and 26th place, Emma Diede was good for a 2:08.79 and 29th place, and Addison Klindt totaled 2:11.08 to secure 30th amongst the 40 skiers.
Timarra Roth had one completed run for a mark of 1:15.81.
In all, TD’s girls placed fifth (6:01.25), 1:38.18 behind Hood River Valley, who finished first at 4:23.07, thanks to the second-place individual effort of Josie Peterson (1:19.83).
St. Mary’s Academy (4:31.14), Sandy (5:31.27) and Cleveland (5:42.17) made up the top-4 teams.
“Our team charged hard, but we ended up having more than our share of mistakes,” Cordell said. “Two of our top five girls and three of our top five boys either crashed or had to hike, hurting our results. That happens in ski racing and everybody is looking forward to this week.”
With a somewhat inexperienced group of skiers on the roster this season, Cordell said the team exudes confidence and it is an exciting aspect to have moving forward.
The times will get better and the results will keep improving.
“We have a fairly young team, with only two seniors this year, but for what we lack in experience, it is more than made up for in enthusiasm,” Cordell said.
Next up for TD is a tough race at Ski Bowl, on the Challenger Course, a slalom starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.
