Ellie Codding and The Dalles Riverhawks had their three-game winning streak snapped by 6A Barlow Tuesday. TD fell behind 17-2 in the first quarter and climbed to within eight points with possession late in the fourth period.
The Dalles girls basketball team went into Tuesday’s contest versus 6A Barlow as a major underdog.
After trailing by a 17-2 margin in the first quarter, the Riverhawks outscored Barlow 27-22 over the final three quarters and inched to within an eight-point deficit with possession of the ball late in the fourth quarter, but could not execute down the stretch in a 42-29 loss.
“A lot of people thought Barlow was going to come in and blow us out. It looked like that early on, until we settled down and played a more relaxed style of play,” TD head coach Brian Stevens said. “The girls did a good job of muddling up the game and it started with the defense. I am proud of them for getting over their slow start and showing what they are made of.”
Down 34-23 entering the fourth quarter, TD used a 5-2 run, capped by a rebound and putback by Molly Taylor to make it 36-28 with five minutes and 40 seconds left.
Barlow responded with a 6-1 spurt over a three-minute span, aided by four TD turnovers and two missed shots.
“We still need to work on closing out games and executing offensively when it matters,” Stevens said. “We are still dealing with being aggressive ball handlers and shooters, so those are things we are going to focus on in practice.”
Overall, The Dalles (4-5 record) dropped 10 field goals, two 3-pointers, and made 7 of 12 free throws.
Kilee Hoylman had nine points, Lauryn Belanger tacked on seven and both Molly Taylor and Rainie Codding added six points apiece, as TD had its three-game winning streak snapped.
Barlow’s 6-foot-3-inch post, Libby Mathis, paced her team’s offense with 14 points, 10 in the first half, Monica Gifford went for 11, and Jocelyn Richardson ended up with eight points.
The Bruins managed just six second-half baskets, and totaled 16 field goals, four 3-pointers, and 6 of 14 free throws for the game.
Up next, the Riverhawks have their final game before Christmas break scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Friday at Sprague.
