The No. 1-ranked and undefeated Summit Storm ran into a determined The Dalles Riverhawk baseball team and used a three-run seventh inning and held off a late rally to secure a 7-3 victory Tuesday in a non-league matchup played at Quinton Street Ballpark.
Down 7-2 to start the home half of the seventh inning, TD junior Colin Noonan led off with a triple and Gordy Harris followed with a run-scoring single to make it 7-3 with one out.
After a stolen base put Harris in scoring position, the Riverhawks had the meat of the order coming up to stage a rally.
Eli Holeman then struck out and Payton Eaton grounded out to second base to end the game.
Summit scored four runs, three earned, on one hits, three walks and an error in the top of the second inning off Eaton, TD’s starter, to jump ahead 4-0.
In the fourth, the Riverhawks broke through, as Angel Esiquio walked with the bases loaded, bringing Holeman, who led the inning off with a walk.
TD had two runners on base and two out trailing by a 4-1 score, but could not scratch across another tally.
The Riverhawks had six hits, received four walks and a one batter hit by a pitch, but stranded seven runners, six in scoring position.
In the fifth inning, Noonan led off with a double and one out later, Holeman drove him in with a double to draw the hawks to a 4-2 deficit.
Holeman was stranded at third base.
The Dalles had another runner on base in the sixth, after a one-out single by Boston Bate, but a 4-6-3 double play thwarted that rally.
Summit rebounded in the seventh for three insurance runs to keep the distance.
Noonan paced the Riverhawk offense with a double, a triple and two runs scored.
Harris had a hit and an RBI, Holeman added a hit, a run and an RBI and both Kellen Mathisen and Bate had the other hits. Colton Walker and Esiquio reached base by walks and Holeman reached once after being hit by a pitch.
Eaton tossed two innings of two-hit ball with three walks and no strikeouts for the loss.
The Dalles (3-6 overall) travels to Milwaukie for another non-league game versus La Salle Prep (2-3) at 4 p.m. Thursday.
