Playing on the varsity stage for the first time, The Dalles freshman Zaida Lopez continues to show improvement every time she steps on the golf course.
Lopez scored a 10-stroke improvement on the back-nine for a score of 158 and the four-person Lady Riverhawk golf squad secured a team total of 517 for sixth place at the Riverhawk Invitational at The Dalles Country Club.
Two-time state placer Iliana Telles had nothing but high praise for Lopez and her willingness to do whatever it takes to help the team be a successful force this spring.
“Having Zaida on our team is amazing and she’s fun to have around,” Telles said. “For it to be her first year playing and this tournament being the fourth or fifth day out on the course, was incredible. We are lucky to have a girl on this team that is willing to do anything.”
Led by the duo of Haley and Shelby Greb, Pendleton High School carded a combined 383 to take home the tournament title, besting Clackamas (454) by 71 strokes.
Haley Greb had a 76 to pick up medalist honors, and both Telles and Shelby Greb finished tied for second place with scorecards reading 89, but Telles was awarded second place due to a scorecard playoff.
Hermiston placed third overall with a 488, Scappoose ended up fourth with a 489, La Grande was fifth (499) and The Dalles came in at sixth place (517).
Barlow had a 521 and Wilson rounded out the team standings with its 536.
La Grande’s Trinity McCarthy had a 95, Hannah Pasco, of Clackamas scored a 98 for fifth place and both Adrienne Hanberg (Barlow) and Madison Cooley (Clackamas) ended up tied for sixth place with tallies of 105.
Telles shot a 43 on the front-nine and added a 46 on the back-nine for her 89 to lead The Dalles.
Laney Schanno had a 66-64 for a 130 as TD’s next best finish, and teammate Abby Walker hit a 65 on the back-nine for her 135.
“The team did fine considering it was their first tournament of the season,” said TD head coach Dan Telles. “We have had limited practice days and ugly weather conditions. The team will need to practice making proper contact, improve on our fundamentals, such as our pre-shot routines.”
TD now has 19 calendar days to work out the kinks and fine-tune elements to its game in time for the Wild Horse Invitational in Pendleton at Noon on Monday, April 4.
At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6, TD hits the road to Hood River for a tournament at Indian Creek Golf Course.
Lopez is looking forward to the opportunity.
“I think we have girls here that want to get better,” she said. “I think if we stay positive and keep working, we can be a good team this season. I am looking forward to playing better and helping this team.”
Entering this season, Telles had an average score of 73 to lead the Riverhawks.
Walker, a junior, has a tournament average of 98, Schanno, also a junior, usually scores within the 120 range.
“These tournaments kind of tell you where you stand a little, but it is still very early,” Walker said. “It is hard to tell where to place the other players and teams. I think that once we get two or three more tournaments under our belt, we can see who the top golfers are. My hope is to cut about 10 strokes down. I don’t think I played my best yet.”
