Freshman Iliana Telles carded an 84, Jennifer Bonham added a personal-best score and The Dalles girl’s golf team totaled a 388 for fourth place in the team standings in Thursday’s Hermiston Invitational at Big River Golf Course.
With Telles’ 84, she finished in a tie for fourth place, 12 strokes off the pace set medalist, Bree Wanderscheid, of Goldendale, Wash., who shot a two-over par 72.
The Pendleton duo of Hailey and Shelby Greb finished second and third, respectively to lead the Buckaroos to first place on the team front with a 338.
Hood River Valley’s Alisha Hay and Telles each carded an 84 for their deadlock.
After Pendleton, Hermiston wound up 28 strokes off the pace with a 366, and Goldendale had a 380 for third.
The Dalles (388) and La Grande (456) rounded out the field.
Former state qualifier, Elizabeth Peters, had a 99 for one of her better efforts of the 2014 campiagn and Bonham set her record pace with a 102.
Junior Olivia Starks kept the pace just a few notches over the century mark at 103 on her scorecard.
“Bonham had a nice round, personal record of 102,” coach Telles said. “She has a goal in mind and almost achieved it.”
There have been several landmark moments accomplished by the inexperienced varsity quartet.
The feeling in the clubhouse is that if they can execute the fundamentals of the game, then next week could be memorable.
Of course, Iliana Telles is setting the bar high for the future and Peters is rounding into championship form, but to see the second-year maven, Bonham, playing her best golf of the season has the Tribe head golf coach feeling optimistic about their chances at Monday’s district tournament.
A state berth is very acheivable.
“All of the girls are getting used to their mechanics, making contact and working to get better,” coach Telles concluded. “(It) should be fun for districts.”
The Dalles hosts district action starting at 9 a.m. Monday for the opening round at The Dalles Country Club.
At 8 a.m. Tuesday, TD, Hermiston, Pendleton and Hood River valley wrap up action with the boys teeing off first.
