With the forfeit news still hanging above them, the No. 5-ranked South Wasco County Redsides have added a little more urgency to each league game.
That extra came through Saturday, as Travis Hayes and Brody Myers combined for 34 points in a 60-35 romp over Mitchell-Spry Tuesday in a Big Sky Conference matchup played in Maupin.
“I think our boys are improving with each week. That is the key for us as we move down the stretch,” said SWC head coach Jim Hull. “We are trying to find new things every day to challenge them, and at the same time, keep things fresh. It is a combination of all those things. If we keep doing that, we will be where we need to be.”
In all, the Redsides shot 27 of 58 from the field, 14 of 34 in the first half, where they used runs of 16-7 and 14-2 to jump ahead of the Eagle-Loggers 30-9 at halftime.
SWC padded its lead in the third quarter with a 17-15 spurt, and capped the game in the fourth quarter for a 25-point triumph.
Defensively, SWC held Mitchell-Spray to 14 of 37 from the field, grabbed 21 steals and held a 29-20 rebounding edge.
Hayes had 18 points, and Myers shot 8 of 13 from the floor for 16 points, and tacked on nine rebounds, eight steals and four assists.
Ty Herlocker checked in with 14 points, six rebounds, and four steals and four blocks, Ellis Rager added 10 points and seven boards, and Devan Dammann dished off five assists, posted three steals and pulled down two rebounds.
Hull has been pleased with efforts put forth by Myers, who has been flirting with triple-doubles with team-highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals in every game this season.
“Not only him, but Ty Herlocker is picking up his game, and at the same time, we have Travis continuing to do what he does, and Eilis fights for those double-digit rebounds every night,” Hull said. “They are not content. We have big goals, so it is good to see that we are continuing to push that envelope each week.”
