The Dalles High School cheerleader Taylor Sugg placed seventh overall, earning a spot as a member of the 2015 Oregon Cheerleading Coaches Association All State Individual team Saturday at Thurston High School.
Sugg, a senior and former state champion dance participant, competed against a field of 120.
Only 28 were selected into the finals and Sugg was top-10 in a group of 19.
Along with Sugg, Riverhawk seniors Lillia Chance and Alyssa Donnell, along with junior Abbey Helseth and sophomores Jessika Nanez and Kendyl Kumm, performed.
Sugg said cheer is a different world than dance, but added that All State was a new, but fun experience.
“All of us worked very hard to get prepared for the competition,” Sugg said. “Everyone was very supportive and no one really knew what to expect coming into it because we had never done it before. I’m very proud of all of the girls. I was very happy I got the opportunity to participate in the competition and make the all-state team in my senior year. We couldn’t have done it without the help our amazing coach.”
The cheerleader learn a choreographed dance/cheer and perform it in front of a panel of judges.
They were judged based on jump technique, dancing, tumbling, voice and execution of sharpness of motions and other elements.
Athletes were timed and had 30 seconds to complete their running tumbling pass, three jumps and standing tumbling pass.
“I saw all six of my girls perform their routines the best I have ever seen them do,” Coach Sugg added. “With this being our first year back into the cheer world, they had no idea what to expect or what we were going into, and they went out onto the mat and blew me away. We are all so excited to begin working on our skills and start working hard for All State 2016.”
