Gabrielle Jennings, Rey Aviluz, Peter Cardosi, Rowan Hopkins, Michael Lantz, Chase Nagamatsu, and David Wring each set personal-bests, and the duo of Quinn Strassheim and Caleb Wild had seasonal-bests to lead The Dalles High School in Thursday’s Kyle Burnside Wildhorse Cross Country Invitational in Pendleton.
“The kids ran really well overall,” said The Dalles head coach Bob Thouvenel.
Avery Cardosi was the Riverhawks’ top female finisher with her time of 21 minutes and 6.3 seconds.
Paige McLeod added a mark of 21:12.6, Caela Dunagan had a 21:18.9 and Molly Nelson tacked on a 21:36.0 to round out TD’s top-4 participants.
“Our first four girls ran really well in a pack, but our fifth girl was back quite aways,” Thouvenel said. “We will need to close that gap between number four and five.”
Bailey Nearing (24:08.1), Marissa Heemsah (24:21.2), Katie Burns (25:29.7), Maria Keilman (25:54.4), Whitney Scott (25:58.3) and Leslie Blakely (26:10.1), Darlene House (26:30.2), Samantha Beall (27:23.9), Brittany Bernstein (28:22.8), Maria Cote-Saez (31:30.2) and Jennings (32:41.2) were all in the best Riverhawks’ harriers.
Thouvenel still sees potential with his girls’ team, a group of six consistent varsity athletes.
Saturday, TD will see its potential breakthrough for the Columbia River Conference District Meet at Sorosis Park against Pendleton, Hermiston and Hood River Valley.
“Four of those girls have been running together for three years and know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” Thouvenel said of the varsity team. “They run together in practice, obviously compete against each other in meets, but I believe respect each other’s abilities. I believe that there is still plenty of room to improve especially on the Sorosis course.”
Union won the girls’ division with 51 points, Pendleton (93) finished second and Hood River Valley (100) ended up in third place.
TD (110), Hermiston (121), Enterprise (162), Sunnyside (167), Tri-Cities Prep (187), Ontario (199) and Mac-Hi (246) capped the standings.
Hermiston won the boys’ division with 57 points, followed by Union (90), Pendleton (93) and La Grande (129).
The Dalles’ boys placed fifth overall with 141 points, as Jony Nelson led the way with a medal-winning eighth place outcome in a time of 16:55.6.
Zerin Croover (17:50.1), Johnny Miller (17:53.3), Tyrell Evans (18:03.1), Luke McLean (18:11.8), Lantz (18:17.6), Ethan Shubert (19:07.3), Aviluz (19:09.0), Chase Snodgrass (19:09.0) and Robert Westhafer (19:10.9) were the ten best male runners.
“Our top six guys ran well,” Thouvenel said. “Again, we have a lot of improvement that needs to be accomplished at next week’s district meet.”
Gabe Lira (19:19.5), Bill Burns (19:33.0), Chase Nagamatsu (19:33.9), Jacob Mekediak (20:09.2), David Wring (20:30.4), Cory Cameron (21:14.2), Paul Clark (21:20.9), Blake Keinlen (21:26.0), Quinn Strassheim (22:03.0), Josiah Andersen (22:12.7) and Peter Cardosi (22:16.8) rounded out the top half of the Riverhawk varsity harriers.
Wild (23:30.6) and Hopkins (24:21.1) were the final two participants, who had top marks.
One good thing about the meet gave Thouvenel a chance to see the progress of the rest of the league in action.
He is looking forward to throwing his athletes out for a chance to win another league title and a state berth.
“I think it will be fun to watch, because you will have four pretty good teams competing against each other,” Thouvenel said. “Maybe HRV, is a little bit better, only because of their times. It will be a very close meet. Our two sophomore girls were new last year, but have stepped it up a little bit more since last fall. If all six girls are running well, we should have a very good district meet.”
