THE DALLES’ junior Jennifer Bonham putts on the fifth hole in the kickoff The Dalles Invitational Golf Tournament Tuesday afternoon at The Dalles Country Club. In the six-team event, the Lady Hawks posted a 513 for fifth place.
Eighteen holes was not enough to solve the sister showdown of Haley and Shelby Greb in Tuesday’s The Dalles Invitational.
The Grebs, out of Pendleton High School, went toe-to-toe for two playoff holes, with the sophomore Haley sinking a birdie shot to score medalist honors in a six-team tournament played at The Dalles Country Club.
The Pendleton duo ended their event with 87 apiece for a 1-2 finish, and The Dalles sophomore Iliana Telles carded a 90 to place third in the individual standings.
Whitney Bahrns, of Pendleton, managed a 97 and La Grande’s Kali Miles turned in a 100 for fifth place.
“It was a good tournament. Exciting with the two Pendleton girls playing in a playoff,” said The Dalles head coach Dan Telles. “The scores were pretty good for the first time on the golf course for a lot of them.”
With the help of the Greb sisters and Bahrns, the Pendleton Buckaroos notched a team title with a combined 402, finishing 29 shots ahead of Hermiston (431).
La Grande placed third with a 438, Scappoose was good for fourth place and The Dalles garnered fifth place, as five golfers matched shots for a 513.
Another Columbia River Conference team, Hood River Valley, rounded out the team standings with a final tally of 604.
After Iliana Telles’ 90, Jennifer Bonham shot a 129 and senior returner, Olivia Starks, shot a 142. Golf newcomer, Delaney Schanno, had a score of 152 and fellow newcomer, Brooke McCall, playing her first-ever tournament etched a 161 on her scorecard.
“Not bad considering we have two girls who picked up a club for the first time seven days ago,” Telles said. “I know we will go up from here though. These girls have a good work ethic and want to get better. It is going to take time, but I am feeling good about their chances of improving.”
At the start of the season, the Riverhawks will have Iliana Telles, Bonham, Starks, McCall, Schanno and Abby Walker on the roster, with Elizabeth Peters possibly coming back later in the year.
Iliana is coming off a successful freshman campaign, which she ended up in eighth place at the OSAA state championship played last May at Emerald Valley Gold Club in Eugene.
If The Dalles has hopes of sneaking deeper into the postseason, Bonham and Starks will need to shave a few strokes off the numbers they posted Tuesday.
“They are both striking the ball well, with limited practice time,” said coach Telles, who added that both Bonham and Starks are just 10 calendar days from completing the varsity basketball season.
McCall and Schanno could also figure into the mix eventually, as long as they remain fundamentally sound and have fun, the Riverhawk coach said.
“Brooke and Laney are making great strides, as first time players,” coach Telles said. “Golf is a lifetime sport, and just getting the ladies to learn the game and enjoy it, is the first objective.”
The Dalles has an extra couple of days off for spring break next week, but hits the links again for the Ridgeview Invitational in a noon start on Friday, April 3 at the Eagle Crest Golf Course in Redmond.
