MAUPIN – The South Wasco County Redsides fell behind by as much as 20 points in the fourth quarter, but battled back in the final two minutes in a 44-29 loss to 2A Perrydale Saturday in a girls’ hoops game in Maupin.
First-year head coach Bill Mead was happy that his team did not give up when faced with a large deficit.
“We try to teach these girls to play hard until the last whistle,” Mead said. “They did not give up. When you have a team still competing, it is something you can build on for your next game.”
The Pirates led 11-7 after one quarter and both teams combined for six points apiece for a 17-13 halftime lead.
With three minutes and 24 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Perrydale forward Telaney Newton hit a layup to run the Pirate lead to 24-14.
Redside point guard Ally Muhleman snapped a three-minute scoreless string with a layup on an assist from Tatum Hahn to inch the team to within 24-17.
Perrydale padded its lead on a 4-2 run in the final minute to go out in front by a 28-19 margin entering the fourth quarter.
In the finale, the Pirates outscored SWC 16-10 for the 15-point win.
Cheyenne Locke paced Perrydale with 12 points, Hannah Mitchell added 10 and Newton had seven points.
For SWC, they had 10 field goals and shot 9 of 21 from the free throw line, as nine players scored points.
Muhleman led with seven points and the duo of Peggy Espeland and Allie Noland tacked on four points each. Molly Foreaker and Lisa McNamee notched three points.
As one of six seniors on the varsity roster, Roxanne O’Neal complimented the underclassmen for playing better.
“The young girls did an awesome job,” said O’Neal, who scored two points. “We want them to get better and play with confidence. If we can all get better together, we will be able to win more games.”
SWC (1-3 overall) next heads to Stanfield for another non-league game at 6 p.m. on Friday.
