Race coordinators Ty Wyman and Bob Thouvenel are happy three upcoming races are creating a buzz.
Large crowds are expected to attend the Dufur Valley Run, the Wasco County Fair Run and the Riverhawk Run over the next month.
More than just the spirit of competition and bragging rights, both Wyman and Thouvenel emphasize creating a family-oriented environment where people from across the gorge can come together for the fun, celebrating activity and fellowship under the clear skies and warm weather.
“I’m pretty excited for the run,” said Wyman, who is also the Dufur track and field coach. “These races aren’t intimidating at all. This year there’s no placements and or ribbons, but next year there will be. It’s all about having fun, just being healthy and helping out the community.”
The Dufur Valley 5k and 10k run/walk is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13 in Dufur.
Registration opens on the day of the event at 6:50 a.m. and runs until 7:35 a.m. Costs are $10, and youth under the age of 18 can enter for $5.
Buses will transport all participants up Dufur Valley to the course starting points. The finish line is back at the high school.
All proceeds raised go towards the Dufur track and field program.
A locker room and showers are available to all participants.
The Dufur Days parade and activities event will run at 10 a.m. downtown.

In addition to organizing the Dufur Valley Run, Wyman is heading the Wasco County Fair 3k, 5k and 10k run/walk in Tygh Valley, starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20.
The 3k and 5k races go out and back on the course, while the 10k event loops the valley floor and includes a short portion of Highway 197.
Costs are $10 for men and women age 19 and older, 18 and under can enter for $5.
All fees include a free entry into the Fair.
There is camping, bathrooms and showers available for all participants signed in.
Two weeks after the Wasco County Fair Run, the second annual Riverhawk Run is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3 at Sorosis Park in The Dalles.
Previously named the Indian Run at its inception in 1997, the event has changed names to the Eagle-Indian Run and now the Riverhawk 1k, 3k and 5k Run.
In 1997, Hector Osuna Jr., a member of the cross country team and a two-time all-state runner in his junior and senior years, thought that the high school program needed an extra fundraiser.
The run has continued since then and grown ever more popular.
Thouvenel is partnering with The Dalles Booster Club to make this a fundraiser for them.
Costs are $20 with a shirt and $10 without, if purchased by Thursday, Sept. 1.
On the day of the race, costs are $25 with a shirt and $15 without. High school kids and younger can gain entry into the race for $5.
Registration runs from 8 to 8:45 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m.
Awards are offered for the top three finishers in all age groups and all three races.
The event starts and finishes at Sorosis Park, up on the bluff near Columbia Gorge Community College.
