Coming off a physical home win Tuesday against Lyle-Wishram, the No. 11-ranked Sherman Huskies were no worse for the wear at the start of tournament action Friday versus Triad.
Max Martin and Isaiah Coles combined for 43 points, and the Huskies worked a 37-20 second-half run to defeat the host Timberwolves for the two-day Compass Classic in Klamath Falls.
“We had a good shooting night and cut down on our turnovers, as we played our most complete game of the year so far against Triad,” said Sherman head coach Bill Blevins.
The Huskies had a good start to their night with an 18-11 run through one quarter.
Up 30-24 at the half, Sherman came out firing in the third period using a 20-7 spurt to take the lead for good.
Martin sank six 3-pointers for a game-high 26 points, and Coles tallied 17.
Kyle Fields tacked on 12 and the freshman duo of Jacob Justesen and Treve Martin added five points each for a Husky team that scored 27 field goals, nine from long range.
One of the main reasons for the Huskies’ second-highest scoring output of the season was their ability to combat Triad’s full court press and trapping defenses.
“In the second half, we kept out of foul trouble and we were able to take care of the ball and extend the lead,” Blevins added.
The Wolves made good on 18 baskets, one from 3-point territory and hit 7 of 18 free throws.
Sherman (4-1 overall) played New Hope Christian (1-6) in the tournament championship Saturday.
After that, the Huskies have a few weeks off before starting league play at Ione for a start time of 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3.
