In this contest, the Riverhawks were down one goal late in the second half, but Jennifer Bonham scored the equalizer to give her team a draw and one point.
One of the greatest gauges of how good a team is and could be is how they respond when faced with adversity.
Coming off a tough 6-1 loss last Thursday at St. Helens, The Dalles girl’s soccer team used a late second-half goal off the foot of Jennifer Bonham to salvage a 2-2 deadlock with 5A Ridgeview in a varsity soccer match Tuesday on the Wahtonka campus in The Dalles.
“The biggest difference was quality of play,” said Riverhawk head coach Colby Tonn. “We are looking forward to getting back out there on Thursday.”
In the opening stanza, both squads fought to a standstill for nearly the duration.
Then with 10 minutes left in the half, the Lady Ravens got a goal behind the TD goalkeeper to make it 1-0 at the intermission.
Once the second-half whistle blew, the Riverhawks got on the board just five minutes in, as Bonham fought through some Ridgeview defenders for a goal to even the count at 1-apiece.
However, that tie was short-lived.
Ridgeview regained control of matters just three minutes later with a tally to run the count out to 2-1.
The Ravens rested back on defense, nursing the lead for a shot at a tough road win, but the Riverhawks were not about to rest on their laurels.
Emma Weir came through with a clutch play and made a swift pass to Bonham, who fired a bullet past a sprawling Erica Nadermann to tie the score at 2-all.
Tonn highlighted the play of his defenders along with the pressure put on by his forwards and midfielders in an 18-shot effort (five on goal).
“Alexia Tapia played some good defense,” Tonn added. “Jen Bonham did a nice job of finishing in front of the goal.”
When it comes to a non-league game, earning points for a tie or win are critical at this stage, because overall rankings matter in terms of playoff qualification.
After Tuesday’s tie, the Riverhawks are ranked No. 22 with three more matches left to gain some ground before the start of Columbia River Conference play at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30 in Hermiston.
The Dalles (2-1-1 overall) heads out to Madras for a showdown with the 4A White Buffalos (1-2) at 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
Earlier this season, Madras lost by a 7-0 mark to Ridgeview.
