The Sherman boys’ tennis team enjoyed success Monday in a road match against The Dalles and continued their solid recent run with a 2-1 pro-set win over Stanfield Tuesday in a varsity match played in Stanfield.
Meghan Belshe and the No. 2 doubles team of C.J. Johnson and Savannah Moe won matches in a 3-2 loss.
“Our trip to Stanfield was fairly successful,” said Sherman coach Kalie Rolfe. “All of our teams played hard, often taking their opponents to deuce. We need to work on finishing our points.”
In one of his toughest matches of the year, Sherman senior Luke Lawrence lost a hard-fought and challenging No. 1 singles match to Hank Gehrke by a 6-8 margin.
Kolton Busler then cruised to a shutout win over Noel Montes 8-0, and the first-time doubles tandem of Garak Casper and Carlos Ambriz defeated their opponents, 8-0.
Belshe had another dominating effort against Stanfield’s Yakima Guzman, scoring an 8-4 No. 1 singles victory.
At No. 2 singles, Gaby Rubio lost to Lydia Hurty, 4-8 and Amy Dabulskis came up short in her No. 3 singles match to Brianna Cornejo, 3-8.
In doubles play, the No. 1 duo of Hollee Kaseberg and Elvia Rubio lost 2-8 in a match played against the Chavez sisters.
Johnson and Moe then finished off the Stanfield tandem of Cornejo and Rojas by a lopsided 8-1 score.
“Our girls fought hard and stayed up with a good team,” said Sherman coach Kalie Rolfe. “The final score does not reflect their multiple games that ended in deuce. Our No. 2 doubles (Johnson and Moe) continued playing well. They really complement each other and build on each other’s strengths.”
Sherman hits the road to Hermiston for the Helix Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.
After that, they host Ione for a league match at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3 in Moro.
