Limited to a crash course of drills and fundamentals in a single organized practice, the Sherman Huskies hit the ground running against 4A Mac-Hi with a dominant 44-27 victory Saturday in a non-league girls’ basketball game at Sherman High School in Moro.
“It was a good first game for us for a few reasons,” said Sherman head coach Steve Kaseberg. “All 12 players got a lot of playing time, it showed the program that we have many areas to improve and clean up. This game showed some real positives when we played together and didn't panic.”
Sherman wound up outscoring Mac-Hi in every quarter of play, with a 9-2 opening-quarter run to set the stage for a lopsided win.
Up by seven points to start the second quarter, the Huskies inched ahead with a 13-11 output to make it 22-13 at the break.
The Lady Pioneers, from Milton-Freewater, did not quit in the second half of play, but Sherman showed that it has the ability to close out games.
The Huskies ended the third quarter on a 13-6 run to lead by a 35-19 margin, and then they completed the win with a 9-8 score in the final quarter for the 17-point win.
One of the main reasons for the Sherman dominance was the work down in the paint by Makenzie Blaylock, Janet Guzman and Katie Asher.
That trio combined for 25 points, and the duo of Asher and Guzman led the team in rebounds.
“The ladies were a bit helter-skelter in the first half, but seemed to calm down in the second half and did a much better job of taking care of the ball, hitting their close-range shots, and playing better team ball the last two quarters,” Kaseberg said.
Kaseberg was happy to get his team on the court, a big step towards achieving success in this winter season.
Given all of the obstacles this team had to clear, Kaseberg was feeling positive about his team.
“All-in-all, the coaches appreciated their energy and their enthusiasm in the game and to getting better this next week,” the coach said.
Sherman (1-0 overall) was scheduled to play Trout Lake, Wash. tonight, but that game was canceled.
This weekend, the Huskies play in the two-day Weston-McEwen Tournament starting Friday.
