Gold awards were flying for members of The Dalles Dance Academy this past weekend at the Onstage New York Dance Competition held at the Portland Convention Center.
TD received top awards in the Teen, Junior and Mini-Division, in areas such as Jazz, Tap, Musical Theater and Solo, as its competition came from approximately 50 studios around the Pacific Northwest and 861 dancers in this regional event.
“This is a four-day, all-day competition with our kids competing against the best of the best,” said instructor Kristi Maley. “We are the small fish in a big pond, but the kids really held their own and represented The Dalles well.”
Onstage New York is the ultimate talent search and competition. The dancers are judged by Broadway professionals from New York in Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Musical Theater, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Song and Dance, Acro and Open categories.
In the Mini-Division, receiving a gold in Tap and a high gold in Jazz, and finishing 16th overall amongst this tough field were Sophia Bucher, McKenzie Barrett, Ella Anderson, Tygh Timinsky, Ava Malcolm, Jayden Hansen and Bridget Donnell.
The talented Mini-Division group of Abbie Canchola, Allie Masterson, Eve Semlor, Lola Nelson, Katelyn Vassar, Tora Jo Timinsky, Laurel Kirby, Vivian Harrah, Hayley Peterson, Madison Stembridge, Bella Perez and Ahnikah Rubio picked up golds in both Jazz and Tap.
Kirby placed gold on her Solo, and both Vassar and Timinsky grabbed gold on their Duo performance.
In the Junior Division, scoring a gold in Jazz, and two Judge’s Awards, along with a high silver in Tap were Meli Avila, City Mains, Madilyn Markwood, Paige Bankhead, Lorelay Berry and Hannah Kortge.
Kortge won gold in her solo and also added a Judge’s Award, and Berry claimed a gold in her Solo.
In the teen division, Aidan Telles, Nathan Nanez, Evan Despain, Jordyn Hattenhauer, Anna Singhurst, Gillian Wolf, Ella Morgan and Giselle Schwartz chalked up golds in the Musical Theater competition.
In the Teen Division, Nanez, Lauryn Despain, Lillia Chance, Taylor Sugg, Delaney Schanno, Abby Mains, Abbey Helseth, Jessica Nanez, Evan Despain, Gillian Wolf, Hattenhauer and Alyssa Donnell won three awards for their efforts, taking a high gold in Tap, a Judge’s Choice Award and earned the highest scoring Tap group nod.
Alyssa Donnell, Taylor Sugg, Madison Richardson, Jessika Nanez, Crysta Harris, Abby Mains, Tianna Smith, Abbey Helseth, Lauryn Despain, Schanno, Chance, Lilly Ley and Kendyl Kumm were honored for their work in the Senior Division with a gold, a Judge’s Choice Awards and also were the highest scoring Open Division team.
Sugg received the platinum award for her Solo performance.
Maley announced that her group will be involved in its year-end recital open to the public starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 at The Dalles High School Auditorium.
Cost is $4 per person and the money goes towards the Riverhawk cheer program.
The dance club offers classes in competitive and recreational classes for boys and girls from the ages of 3-19, and the next session begins at the end of June and runs for six weeks.
This summer, Maley announced that she is offering an all-boys hip hop class open for interested parties between the ages of 8 and up and some ballet classes.
