With a new defensive calling card instituted this season, the South Wasco County Redsides are steadily showing their worth on the defensive end by forcing several turnover into easy baskets for a 72-39 win Friday over Lost River at the two-day Culver Tournament.
Through the game, the Redsides drilled 28 field goals, seven from 3-point range to go along with a 9 of 11 split from the free throw line.
Most of those points came at the hands of a fierce pressure defense that Lost River had no answers for.
“What I noticed, especially on our press, guys are starting to rotate past the first and second players off of it and picking up the third and fourth ones correctly,” said SWC head coach Jim Hull. “We got a lot of steals from that and it set them back because of our pace. It is important for us to maintain that pace to make these other teams uncomfortable in their offense.”
The Redsides led 20-14 through one quarter, and then they put the finishing touches on matters in the second and third quarters with spurts of 22-8 and 23-11 to lead 65-33 entering the final quarter.
At one point, the lead grew to 40 points.
David Ocacio netted 27 points, as he hit five 3-pointers, five two-point shots and hit 2 of 3 from the line.
The senior rattled off 12 in the first quarter and he completed his scoring binge with 13 points in the third period, before sitting out the majority of the fourth quarter.
Colton Nannini had eight points, Nathan Duling added seven points, five in the first half.
Travis Hayes managed seven points and Loreto Morelli checked in with six, both of them doing their damage in the second half.
Devan Dammann and Ellis Rager added six points each to add to the scoring balance for the Redsides, who had seven players hit the scoresheet.
SWC (3-3 overall) played in the tournament championship game Saturday. At 5:30 p.m. next Saturday, the Redsides host Irrigon.
