The Gorge Technology Alliance is hosting six robotics trainings for students around the gorge this summer. There will be two introductory and four advanced trainings in the towns of Stevenson, White Salmon/ Bingen, Hood River, The Dalles and Moro. Trainings are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on all Saturdays from June 15 to July 27 (excluding July 6). Each is $10 and includes lunch; scholarships are available if needed. Pre-registration is required and each event will be limited to 20 students. Parents are encouraged to attend to learn this fun activity with your student. Trainings are most appropriate for kids ages 9 to 14 and will cover construction and programming for LEGO Mindstorm NXT kits.
Key Club donates to CASA
The Dalles Wahtonka High School Key Club was recently awarded a 2013 Tradition of Compassion Award for Outstanding Community Service Organization by the Mid Columbia Health Foundation. As part of this award, they choose a local charity to receive an additional donation from the Foundation. After considering many worthy organizations, they selected Columbia Gorge CASA, a local non-profit that trains and supports volunteers to advocate for children in foster care. CASA stands for “Court Appointed Special Advocates” and are appointed by local judges to ensure that kids do not languish in the local foster care system and to make sure that they get the services and support they need as they go through this traumatic experience.
Speaking about the award, Susan Erickson, CASA’s Executive Director, said “Columbia Gorge CASA is so appreciative of the donation and even more impressed by the community awareness and involvement demonstrated by these high school students.”

Ventriloquist coming to Sherman
He may be made of wood, but ventriloquist figure Rudy O’Riley is no dummy! Rudy is the star of the “The Dig Into Reading Show” that is coming to the Sherman County Public/School Library in Moro on June 15, at 11 a.m. Rudy’s mission in life is to motivate children to read books by spreading the word that “a gold mine of fun awaits you when you dig into reading.”
All ages are invited to attend the free program which features over 40 minutes of live magic, ventriloquism, audience participation, comedy adventure, and of course, wooden ventriloquist dummy and fan favorite Rudy O’Riley.

Patriotic day planned for kids
Kids interested in celebrating Flag Day by learning more about our country can attend the Patriotic Kid’s Day hosted by Northern Wasco Parks and Recreation on June 14 from 10 a.m. to noon at Sorosis Park. The event is free and registration begins at 9:30 a.m. There will be stations set up with games meant to teach children ages 6-12 about flag etiquette, American history and the United States Constitution.
