A phone call that began with, “The Dalles Wahtonka High School, student speaking,” ended with the male caller threatening to rape the female student who answered the call.
It happened April 1, but it was no joke to the student, who now feels afraid to go anywhere alone, according to city police logs.
The school reported it to police, but the caller’s number was listed as “unknown,” and there’s nothing police can do, said The Dalles Police Chief Jay Waterbury. They did open a report on the matter in case any new information develops.
The caller first inquired about activities and sports schedules, then started asking the student personal questions, such as her name and age.
Then his conversation became of a sexual nature, and when he said he was going to rape her, she hung up.
The Dalles Wahtonka High School Principal Nick Nelson said of the caller, “There was probably some slipperiness going on, some smoothness; that’s my understanding.”
The school’s phone system doesn’t have a feature to learn the number of a caller, Nelson said. As soon as the student hung up on the man, another call came in anyway, he said.
Nelson said the school’s previous training for students who take calls has simply been to answer the phone with the phrase “The Dalles Wahtonka High School, student speaking.”
Now, though, the school is telling them not to give out any personal information, and to promptly pass on any phone calls to the appropriate staff member and not get involved in a conversation.
Both he and Waterbury said they’d never heard of a call like this made to a school.
