Ruby Dosier, an eighth grader at St. Mary’s Academy, was recently notified by the National Geographic Society that she is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2014 Oregon State Geographic Bee.
Sponsored by Google and Plum Creek, the upcoming competition is the second level of the National Geographic Bee, marking its 26th year in practice. Bees were organized and held in schools with fifth through eighth grade students throughout the state to determine each school’s winner.
St. Mary’s Academy held its classroom and school level bees in December. Students who placed at the top of their classes and participated in the school level bee were fifth graders Emily Adams (1st) and Elena Cardosi (2nd), sixth graders Jake Dollarhide (1st) and Ben Nelson (2nd), seventh graders Petra Ervin (1st) and Nick Keilman (2nd) and eighth graders Ruby Dosier (1st) and Paris Green (2nd).
Following her first place finish at the SMA school-level bee, Dosier took a qualifying test that was submitted to the National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society invited the students with the top 100 scores in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. Territories to compete at the state level.
The 2014 Oregon State Geographic Bee will be held at Western Oregon University on Friday, April 4.
The state winner will receive $100, the Complete National Geographic on DVD and a trip to Washington D.C. to represent Oregon in the National Geographic Bee finals to be held at National Geographic Society Headquarters May 19-21.
The national winner will receive a $50,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the society.
