Honey bee colony losses are reported by several differing organizations both nationally and regionally. The USDA identifies the number of active colonies annually. The ‘over wintering’ hive losses for 2024/2025 were reported to be 62%.

Of late there is a growing conversation concerning Native Bees versus the European Honey Bee. In order to arrive at an appreciation of these two differing segments of the insect world, one must delve into the behavior of each.

This is a time for Commercial Bee Operations to gear up for the annual migration of colonies into California. The honey bees, like most other insects, are clustered in their hive against the cold wintry days. They are not sleeping, but not active either.
