A 20-acre fire that came within 10 feet of Pinewood Mobile Manor by the Discovery Center Tuesday morning scorched a pool house, but damaged no other buildings, according to Mid-Columbia Fire & Rescue.
The fire was reported about 10:30 a.m. as a grass fire about a half-acre in size, on the south side of Interstate 84, just west of The Dalles, said Dave Lapof, division chief at MCFR.
The fire burned a number of acres around the mobile home park but an intensive response from multiple agencies kept it from the 60-plus unit development.
The fire did jump both directions of Interstate 84 and got onto the north side of the interstate and was burning in some railroad ties, he said. Rail traffic was halted 30 minutes while fire crews worked.
Interstate 84 remained open in both directions, while Highway 30, which runs parallel to and south of I-84, was closed for a time.
Winds blowing to the east took the smoke into The Dalles.
There were no evacuations of the mobile home park and residents were told to shelter in place, Lapof said. A woman was taken from the fire scene by ambulance after burning her feet trying to help put out the fire, Lapof said.
The woman who burned her feet was wearing flip flops, he said.
MCFR Chief Bob Palmer said the woman had second-degree burns.
He said people have a right to defend their property from fire, but they do so at their own risk.
Palmer said personnel from the U.S. Forest Service and Oregon Department of Forestry examined the originating point of the fire and could not determine a cause.
Palmer cautioned that fire season started early and will be long. He urged people to exercise caution with fireworks and open campfires and the like. “The grass is extremely volatire and it doesn’t take much to get it going.”
Crews came from Hood River, Dallesport, Klickitat County ambulance, the Oregon Department of Forestry, and the U.S. Forest Service, Lapof said.
