Three men got into a fight in Dufur Tuesday night over how much playing time elementary school boys were getting on a basketball team, according to the Wasco County sheriff’s log.
The mother of a player participating in the Dufur Parks and Recreation program had texted the coach earlier, saying her son wasn’t getting enough playing time.
The coach’s husband texted back, inviting the parents to come to practice to discuss it. The parents took the text as threatening, but a deputy who viewed the text did not see it as such.
The mother and the coach got into a verbal argument, and then the father mentioned that his son and another man’s son were not getting enough playing time.
That other man said not to bring his son into it because he, as a parent, felt everything was fine, according to the police log.
The first man then told the second man he was a coward for not sticking up for his son. “A shoving match ensued that led to a wrestling match that led to punches being thrown,” the police log stated.
Children were taken out of the room after the altercation turned physical.
The first man was hit in the mouth, the log said of the incident, which occurred around 7:30 p.m.
The coach’s husband, who is on crutches, separated the two men, and a bystander started recording video of the incident, in which the coach’s husband is seen telling the first father to leave the gym.
According to the log, the first father then “fake punched” the coach’s husband, who took a step toward him. The father then pushed the coach’s husband, who then dropped his crutches and ran after him, grabbing his shirt.
The father punched the coach’s husband in the face, according to the log.
When deputies arrived, no one wanted to pursue charges, although they were told the district attorney may further pursue the incident. Deputies also recommended to the principal that the men not be allowed back in the gym.
The principal said he would take it into consideration.
The father who initially complained about his son’s playing time had complained of chest and mouth pain, but declined a medic.
