A new, four-page newsletter has been introduced by the city of The Dalles.
The initial publication, which is titled “The City of The Dalles/State of the City,” features brief biographies of the new faces in The Dalles City Hall, including Police Chief Patrick Ashmore, Human Resources Director Daniel Hunter, City Manager Julie Krueger, Planning Director Steve Harris, and City Clerk Izetta Grossman.
The first issue came out on Oct. 7.
The newsletter, expected to be produced quarterly, also features a report from Public Works Director Dave Anderson about upgrades to the city’s wastewater treatment plant and information about ongoing projects from various city committees.
According to Krueger, the concept came from one of the city council’s goals, which was to develop an annual report on the city.
“As we were working on the annual report, someone said ‘the city does a lot of great work, but you don’t tell your story very well,’” Krueger explained. “After some discussion, it was decided that a quarterly newsletter might be a better way to tell our story rather than just once a year.”
Krueger added the cost to put the newsletter together is minimal. “We printed a bunch this time; cost was $200,” Krueger said. “I don’t think we’ll need as many, but for our first time, we weren’t sure how many to print, so I expect the cost to be much less in the next quarter. Once people get used to looking for it on the website, and getting it electronically, we won’t need too many paper versions.”
Ideas and information for the articles are solicited from all city employees, with the city clerk, Izetta Grossman, putting it all together.
“The purpose of the newsletter is to have one more avenue of communication with the public, while reporting on the work of the city in an informative, positive way,” explained Grossman.
Paper copies will be distributed at The Dalles City Hall and at The Dalles/Wasco County Library. The newsletter will also be posted to the city’s website home page under the “hot topics” heading.
It will also be on the city’s Facebook page. Further, The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce is linking the newsletter to its website.
The next edition of the city’s newsletter is scheduled to be available in January.
