The newly formed The Dalles High School Chef Club brought home a third place trophy from a cooking competition in Bend in mid-May.
On the third-place team were Jackie Morales, Armando Perez, Selena Huizar-Perez and Andrea Barajas. Their Marsala chicken was one of 16 entries in the competition.
They were among the nine students from the after-school club that traveled to Bend May 18 to participate in the competition at Cascade Culinary Institute at Central Oregon Community College’s campus.
The students were split into three teams and tasked with making poached chicken dishes. They were judged in five areas: knife skills; organization; food safety and sanitation; technique; and taste and presentation.
“We’ve have been working all year toward this competition,” said Julie McIntire, the culinary arts teacher at the high school. The advising chef is Mike Wheeler.
“The final scores showed that all three teams in this first-year program were very competitive and performed with excellent skills and attitude against schools that have competed for years,” McIntire said in a press release.
Wheeler said, “All three teams made us very proud to be a part of this new program.”
Also competing for The Dalles were Eduardo Muratalla, Adrian Castellanos, Quinn Raffensperger, Elijah Heimsoth and Asa Madsen.
