THE DALLES — The Dalles Riverhawk softball team clinched a spot in the Class 4A state playoffs by finishing second in the Tri-Valley Conference (TVC).
The No. 15-ranked Riverhawks are guided by Duane Witter and finished with 11 wins in the TVC, behind conference champion Gladstone High whose TVC record was nearly perfect at 14-1 (their lone loss came at the hands of the Riverhawks on April 24).
Last week, The Dalles lost 5-1 to Gladstone on May 13 and again to Estacada, 8-2, on May 15. They returned home on May 16 and beat Molalla (2-13 TVC, 7-16 overall) in five innings. The 11-1 win included three hits from junior Hailey Johnston (3-for-3, one RBI, double) and four RBI from senior shortstop Maddie Brock (2-for-3, double, stolen base). Other Riverhawks with a hit included Edie May (1-for-3, two runs scored), Ava Graves (1-for-3, two runs scored, RBI, double), Cadence Young (1-for-3, two RBI) and Makenzie Barrett (1-for-2, RBI).
Junior Siyra Faulkner faced 22 batters in five innings and allowed six hits with six strikeouts. She allowed just one earned run.
The Riverhawks will play a nonleague game on May 22 against the No. 4-ranked (5A) Dallas High Dragons for one final tune up before the first round of playoffs that are scheduled to begin May 27.
