HOOD RIVER — More than 1,000 participants signed up to compete in the annual Gorge Downwind Championships paddlesports festival, held July 14–19 at the Skamania County Fairgrounds in Stevenson, Washington.
Among this year’s highlights was a historic development for the sport of surfski paddling: the debut of the USA Canoe Ocean Racing (COR) National Championships, hosted in partnership with the American Canoe Association (ACA).
“Hosting the first-ever NGB-sanctioned National Championship in conjunction with the Gorge Downwind Championships marks a defining moment for USA Canoe Ocean Racing,” said Matt Drayer, Chairperson of the ACA Ocean Racing Committee. “By combining the ACA’s commitment to athlete development and competitive excellence with the outstanding production of the Gorge festival, we’re setting a new standard for surfski racing in the United States.”
Eligible ACA members who competed in the GDC’s main event were automatically entered into the National Championship field, with national titles awarded in men’s and women’s overall and age group divisions. The Nationals field featured many of the top surfski paddlers from across the country, making for an exceptionally competitive and prestigious debut.
Taking top honors in the women’s overall category was Ana Swetish of Washington, while Austin Kieffer of California claimed the men’s overall title.
