THE DALLES — Tyson Long and Willow Ziegenhagen showcased their track and field talents for The Dalles High School, most recently at the April 18 Willamette Falls Invitational at Oregon City High School.
The Riverhawks joined 24 other schools of all enrollment sizes to compete in the annual meet at Pioneer Memorial Stadium.
Ziegenhagen won two events, the javelin at 117 feet, 6 inches, and the high jump at 5 feet. She also ran legs on the Riverhawk 4x100 meter relay and 4x400 relay. Ziegenhagen is ranked second in OSAA Class 4A in the javelin (129-2) and sixth in the high jump (5-0).
The Dalles’ short relay set a season best with its 52.08 clocking — good enough for fifth place. Other team members were Bryce Newby, Gabriela Dominguez Bahena, and Laura Black. The fifth-place Riverhawk 4x400 relay ran 4:24.87, a second off the school’s season best. On that team were Black, Riley Stocks, Ebany Mondragon, and Ziegenhagen.
Black also was seventh in the pole vault at 8 feet, and she ran a season best 63.09 in the open 400. Dominguez Bahena ran a personal best 13.5 in the 100 meters, and Stocks also dipped below 14 seconds at 13.95 (PR). Senior Noraya Gallegos bounded a personal best 30-11.5 in the triple jump.
Long won the 1500-meter run in 4 minutes, 11.51 seconds, and was sixth in the 3000 in a personal best 9:15.58. The longer race also resulted in a lifetime best from freshman Lazarus Taylor (9:43.11), and season best from senior Aiden Erickson. Taylor also ran a PR in the 1500 (4:30.41).
On the track for The Dalles boys, Patrick Rankin ran 42.9 (PR) to finish fourth in the 300 hurdles; Derek Goulart was eighth in the 100 at 11.54; and Tyler Irving was seventh in the 110 hurdles (17.14).
In field events, Connor Hajek threw the shot put 40-3.5, Adam Trosper threw the discus 116-3; and Goulart cleared 6 feet to finish third in the high jump.
The Dalles also hosted a mid-week meet on April 15, where Tri-Valley Conference foe Gladstone joined the Riverhawks. Notable marks in that meet by the host team included: Trosper’s 119-5 discus throw; Long’s 42.73-second speed workout in the intermediate hurdles; Taylor’s 4:38.93 1500; Black and Abigail Pope’s 1-2 finish in the girls 800 (2:38.43 and 2:40.58); Newby’s 96-2 girls javelin throw; and Mondragon’s season best in the triple jump of 28-0.5.
