HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley senior Syl Perrin won the 3000-meter run at the May 8 Dean Nice Invitational track and field meet at Gresham High School. The meet attracted 21 schools of various enrollment sizes, including the Eagles who had four placers among the top eight finishers. They included Perrin, who won the race in a photo finish and season best 10 minutes, 16.52 seconds. Leah Richman, a freshman from Portland’s Grant High, was second in 10:16.68.
Perrin’s winning time was just two seconds shy of her lifetime best, which she set at the 2025 OSAA Class 5A state meet.
HRV freshman Diyora Khudoidodova placed third in the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches. Four jumpers tied at that height; Gresham’s Aliyah Miller won on fewer misses.
Senior Francisco Solberg is making up for lost time in the pole vault after missing most of the early season with a leg injury. Solberg finished fourth in the pole vault at 12-6 — a day after clearing 13-6 at a Northwest Oregon Conference home meet (see related story). Also placing in the meet for HRV was sophomore Savina Davis, who was eighth in the 1500 meters in a season best 4:54.89.
A number of other Eagle athletes recorded either personal or season bests, including senior sprinter Matt Trickey, who ran the 200 in a PR 22.59 in the preliminaries. Trickey also ran the 100 meters in 11.15. Senior teammate Colin Gerald ran the 100 in 11.85 and the 200 in 23.97.
The HRV girls 4x400 relay was 12th in a season best 4:18.12. The team included Georgiana Williams, Perrin, Davis, and Uma Carosella.
Also placing individually in the top 16 were junior Wyeth Droege, who was 14th in the boys 110 hurdles (15.8); senior Jack Miller, who was 13th in the boys javelin at 144-7; Davis, who was 12th in the girls 800 in 2:26.46; and Karina Little and Eleanor Buser, who were 10th and 14th in the girls pole vault (8-6 and 8-0).
Some HRV athletes will compete May 14 in the NWOC JV District Championship while others will train through this week and compete at the May 20 and 22 district finals. The district meet is a qualifier for the OSAA Class 5A state meet in late May.
