The ninth-ranked Pendleton Buckaroos continued their reign of terror in the Columbia River Conference Friday night, handing the HRV Eagles the team’s worst loss of the season — league or otherwise — with a 96-54 drubbing in Pendleton.
The Buckaroos (11-6, 4-0 CRC), never let the Eagles (2-14, 1-3) in the game, utilizing efficient shooting and an aggressive defense to score points and force 21 HRV turnovers. It took only a few minutes for Pendleton to put the game out of reach for HRV, outscoring the Eagles 24-6 in the first quarter. In the first half alone, HRV Head Coach Steve Noteboom said Pendleton shot 64 percent from three-point range.
At halftime, a frustrated HRV team headed to the locker room with a 51-22 deficit. The gulf widened in the third quarter as Pendleton went up 75-41.
“We were never really in it at all,” Noteboom said. “(Pendleton) just put on a shooting clinic. We got down early and were never in the game.”
Though Friday’s game wasn’t that much different score-wise compared to the teams’ first meeting this season (82-54 loss Jan. 22 in Hood River), Noteboom said HRV “just didn’t come out with much intensity” against the Buckaroos in last week’s outing.
“We just didn’t really seem ready to play and (the Buckaroos) came out just on fire,” he noted. “It was a pretty frustrating night for the guys.”
HRV shot a respectable 13-for-30 (43 percent) on two-pointers and 13-for-20 (65 percent) on free throws, but once again, struggled on its three-point shots, going 4-for-21 (19 percent) from behind the arc.
Tyrone Stintzi was the lone Eagle in double digits for scoring, leading the team with 14 points. Dallas Buckley, Parker Kennedy and Noah Noteboom were next on the score sheet with nine, eight, and seven points, respectively. Kennedy and Buckley led in rebounding with six boards for Kennedy and five for Buckley. Noteboom and Zak Ellsworth each had three assists in the game.
Noteboom said Monday morning that sophomore Dakota Kurahara had received surgery that morning to help alleviate a non-basketball related partially collapsed lung that Kurahara suffered last week and was still at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland. No update was available at press time on when he might be released from the hospital.
Next, the Eagles were looking to get another win against Hermiston (8-11, 1-3) Tuesday night, this time on the road (results not available at press time) and then look to get revenge against The Dalles (5-13, 2-2) after the Riverhawks defeated HRV 72-70 in a game played last Tuesday. Friday’s game against The Dalles will start at 7 p.m. and will be played in Hood River.
