Hood River Valley High School released their March Athletes of the Month earlier this month: Chad Klaas (boys track), Katie Kennedy (girls track), Monica De La Rosa (girls tennis), and Tristan Keely (boys track/tennis).
Klaas, a sophomore, has been having a standout season in pole vault, leading the Columbia River Conference with an attempt of 12 feet, 6 inches, which also ranks him 10th overall in 5A boys track and field. He is also ranked sixth in the CRC in javelin.
Kennedy, a sophomore, is a returning state placer on the girls track team and her high jump mark of 5-5, currently leads all girls across all classifications in the state of Oregon and is just short of the school record. She is also ranked fifth in 5A for long jump (17-1.25) and sixth in 100 hurdles (16.23).
De La Rosa, a sophomore, normally plays JV, but was bumped up to her first-ever varsity singles match in a contest against Ridgeview. After losing the first set 2-6, she battled to win the second set 7-5 and then win 13-10 in a tiebreaker to take the match.
Keely, a sophomore, lettered in wrestling and is currently working hard on the JV track team competing in the long jump, 100-meter dash and javelin. In wrestling, by the end of the season, Keely earned the most Pride Points on the team by showing up to do the extras for the team; e.g., helping at fundraisers, working the kids tournaments, first one there for setup and last to leave for cleanup, etc.
