HOOD RIVER — Copeland Louis and Drew Lucas each finished second in their weight classes at the Eagles’ Hood River Memorial Tournament Jan. 31.
Hood River Valley finished seventh, with six top-six placers, in the annual tourney, which drew 16 teams to town.
Louis was second at 126 pounds, losing to Class 5A state tourney wrestler Hunter Danks of Bend’s Mountain View High in the final. Danks finished sixth at the 2025 OSAA state tournament at 113 pounds. Louis earned his spot in the title match with a 9-6 decision over McKay High’s Horacio Conchola.
Lucas was second at 132 pounds, winning his first three matches before falling in the championship to 2025 state wrestler Johnny Talmadge of Dallas High.
Arguably, one of the toughest brackets was at 138 pounds, where HRV’s Layton Adams placed fourth. He won his first two matches by decision before losing an 8-4 decision in the semifinals to Kash Davis of Redmond. Both were state tourney wrestlers a season ago.
In the consolation round, Adams bounced back to beat August Tenkhoff, 7-0. The Grant High wrestler was a 2025 6A state tourney qualifier. Beau Sandberg, the Class 4A fifth-place finisher in 2025 from Molalla, then won by decision in a third-fourth match over Adams.
Aaron Smith (190) and Ethan Clough (120) each won three matches for HRV and finished fifth. Clough’s losses were to 2025 state tourney grapplers, attesting to the caliber of competition at 120.
Brayon Molinero (157) and Rury Pelaya Ceja (144) were both sixth for the Eagles, who scored 159.5 team points. Redmond won the tourney with 274.5.
