If the current HRV junior varsity girls lacrosse team is any indicator of what the future holds for the school’s varsity program, get ready to see the Eagles’ trophy case fill up.
Following Monday’s 13-2 defeat of Central Catholic at Westside Elementary, the Eagles ended their season with a perfect 12-0 record. The girls went on a rampage this season, never scoring fewer than 10 goals and usually beating their opponents by seven- or eight-goal margins. They had an absurd goal differential of 141-38 and finished first overall in the state standings out of 31 teams — an honor they shared with the JV team from Corvallis, although that team only played nine games and tied in two of them.
Makenzie Bassham, who has been the head coach of the team for the past two years, was thrilled with how her team played this season.
“Hood River’s JV lacrosse team is playing at a higher caliber of play than I’ve ever seen at the JV level in our school’s history,” she said. “They will make for an excellent future squad and lead to a lot of success for HRV girls lacrosse. I’m so proud of how easily this group adapted to the culture (Varsity Head Coach) Andrew (McElderry), myself and the other coaches have implemented. I anticipate state titles in Hood River’s future.”
McElderry was also proud of the team’s performance and commended the coaching staff’s efforts this season.
“Head Coach Makenzie Bassham and Assistant Melissa McElderry have done an amazing job,” he said.
The team was led in scoring this season by freshman midfielder Alex Willis, who had 29 goals on 35 shots (83 percent) in nine games and averaged 3.667 points per game. She also had a team-high 42 draw controls won. She was closely followed in scoring by frosh midfielder Brooklyn Holman, who had 27 goals on 53 shots (51 percent) in 12 games. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Orr, who has spent some time on varsity both last season and this season, was also a huge factor in the team’s success this year, who led the team in assists (10), ground balls (49), caused turnovers (22) and was second in draw controls won (28) and was fourth in scoring (13 goals). Junior Emily Gallegos served as the team’s goalie this year, stopping 27 of 64 shots (42 percent), with a goals against average of 2.22.
Other athletes who played on this year’s team included Taja Adsit, Sarah Hall, Sloan Hall, Ashley Hendricks, Blair Holman, Oona Johnsen, Sonja Joplin-Clay, Rebecca Kiyokawa, Elena Kroll, Kat McElderry, Ella Mudry, Leia Paul, Josie Petersen, Lauren Trumbull, and Clara Vorgaard.
