THE DALLES — The Hattenhauer Distributing Columbia Gorge Hustlers 17-and-under team has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in summer league baseball games. The Hustlers (24-11 overall, 10-2 league) won the Zone 2 league championship and they qualified for the state tournament July 23-25 in Eagle Point.
The Hustlers split a July 16 home doubleheader versus the Everett St. Mechanics American Legion Single A squad. Despite getting outhit 7-5 in Game 1, the Hustlers won the match up, 5-3. The Hustlers built a 3-2 lead after two innings and then they extended their advantage to 5-2 in the third frame.
The Hood River Valley High duo of sophomore Landen Pratt (1-for-4) and senior Chaz Valentine (1-for-3, RBI) helped lead the Hustlers’ offense. The Dalles’ trio of sophomores Kale Beardmore (1-for-3, double), Chase Peterson (1-for-3) and Gunner Bustos (1-for-3) also contributed to the Hustler offense.
The Hustlers’ pitching trio of starter Pratt and relievers Drake Dark of Sherman High and Bustos combined on the mound for nine strikeouts, six walks and no earned runs.
In Game 2, the Mechanics responded to the loss by bouncing back with a stronger performance to get an 11-5 victory. The Hustlers struggled early and fell behind 9-2 after three innings.

The Hustlers were outhit, 8-5, and they were led offensively by Valentine (1-for-4, RBI), Beardmore (1-for-3, RBI), The Dalles High freshman Hunter Kelley (2-for-3, RBI), and The Dalles junior Sawyer Dray (1-for-1, two RBI).
The trio of starting pitcher Kelley and relievers Peterson and Dray combined on the mound for seven strikeouts, 10 walks and six earned runs.
The Hustlers split a July 18 league home doubleheader versus the Post 104 Warriors of Aloha. They won Game 1, 16-10, followed by a 14-13 loss in Game 2. In their final home game of the season, the Hustlers faced the White Salmon River Bandits in a double-header on July 19. The Bandit’s won Game 1, 21-12 and the Hustlers won game 2, 16-7. Wyatt Stelma (2-for-4, RBI), Kellen Olson (2-for-3, RBI) Trenton Boydston (4-for-5, three RBI), Ryder Graves (4-for-4, three RBI) and Gabe Borton (1-for-4, three RBI) helped lead the River Bandits to the Game 2 win. In Game 1, Pratt (2-for-3, RBI), Valentine (RBI), Daylee Miller (RBI), Bustos (1-for-3, RBI) and Sawyer Case (2-for-3, RBI) had solid efforts at the plate to help lead the Hustlers to the victory.
