The Hood River Valley Swim Team Osprey had a good showing at the Mt. Hood Aquatic Center in Gresham last weekend during the Seth Dawson Invitational. Highlights included: Celilo Brun achieving an A time (qualifying for the Oregon State Swimming Championships in February) in the 1650 freestyle (20 minutes, 44.76 seconds), Faith Ocheskey achieving her first ever A time in the 50 free (27.0) and Michelle Graves swimming to new A times in the 100 backstroke (1:26.38) and 50 free (34.68).
The Osprey’s two novice boys, Izaiah Adams and Seth Millan, both dropped 10 seconds in the 50 free since they swam it during a meet in Kelso, Wash., early last month. Coach Shelly Rawding said the team’s 8U squad could only swim 50- and 100-meter races but still “did great.” Mallory Keller, Meg Tappert and Leah Sandoval swam all new events and between the nine events they swam there was only one DQ in the 50 breaststroke. Willow Hollowell swam to three best times in those longer races with a three-second drop in the 50 breaststroke. Max Graves kept his A time in the 50 breaststroke, and dropped four seconds in his 100 individual medley (IM).
Campbell Keller and Nora Sandoval both swam to six best times in six events. Keller’s biggest drop was seven seconds in the 200 IM, and Sandoval swam her first-ever 200 fly.
Skyla Hollowell swam to four best times, including a seven-second drop in the 100 backstroke. Clayton Lee swam to three personal bests, Shea Kasenga dropped time in two events, and Thea Smith knocked five seconds off her 200 IM. Marina Castaneda wrapped up this meet with a sixth-place finish in the 100 free.
HRVST’s seniors were busy scoring points for the team. Nadia Smith scored in all events and was third in the 200 fly, Jade Smith scored points for the team in the 100 free, Courtney Castaneda placed in both the 50 free and 200 back, Allie Burke also scored points in the 200 backstroke event, and Molly Nelson swam to a best time for HRVST in the 200 IM.
