THE DALLES — The Dalles High (TDHS) Riverhawks boys and girls swim teams spent the past week practicing and tapering for the upcoming OSAA 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 1 meet Feb. 13-14 at La Grande. The top finishers in that event at the Veteran’s Memorial Pool will qualify for the state meet Feb. 20-21 at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton.
The Dalles’ boys team is coming off a win at a 16-team meet in Madras two weeks ago. The Riverhawks, guided by seventh-year Coach Shea Macnab and assistant Coach Sarah Lawrence, will be among the favorites at district.
“For the boys to finish first out of 16-teams and beat two 5A schools was extremely impressive,” said Macnab. “It was just a great overall performance for our entire team. We’re really looking good as we head into districts.”
The Dalles’ girls squad was seventh at the meet in Madras. The Riverhawks were missing a key swimmer in that event: Fiona McInnes.
“So that affected the overall score for the girls team,” said Macnab. “Having her back at districts will help us have a stronger performance, and she’ll also do very well in her individual events.”
The Dalles junior Rhett Loughmiller was a state meet qualifier in 2025 in the 200 and 100 freestyle races, and the 100 backstroke. Senior Everest Lenardson placed fifth in the 200 individual medley. Those three and Maverick Varland swam at state on the Riverhawks’ 200 medley relay.
Junior Kaiya Doty placed fourth at state for The Dalles in 2025 in the 100 breaststroke, and she also competed in the 200 individual medley. Doty, junior Lillen Vaught, and senior Laura Black also swam at state in the 200 freestyle relay for the Riverhawks.
