WHITE SALMON — Columbia High School’s volleyball team went head-to-head against Seton Catholic Prep Sept. 29, losing in straight sets, but recovered to win at Stevenson two days later, 3-0.
Throughout the first set of the Trico League match against visiting Seton, both teams stayed within two points of each other, with Columbia holding a slight lead over the Cougars most of the time. Seton pulled ahead late and won 26-24. The Bruins’ back row players, specifically junior libero Genesis Orozco played exceptionally well with 14 digs.
The second set was just as neck-and-neck, with Seton pulling away at the end, 26-24. Columbia Coach Naomi Posini said: “[The] team played the best volleyball I’ve seen them play so far this season. Seton is a tough opponent and consistently a top-10, state-ranked team. To go back and forth and lose those first two sets 24-26 against them was a testament to how strong our team is.”
Seton won the third set, 25-13, though Columbia fought with energy until the end, supported all night by the Bruins’ vibrant student section. The student section is well known on social media, and is famous for its game night themes, Tuesday’s being “construction.”
Columbia flipped the switch at Stevenson behind solid serving and receiving. Posini said the team had a serve rating of 2.39, led by Mckena Carlock (2.64, four aces), Fiona Grabb (2.58, two aces), and Lola Marti (2.54, two aces).”
The Bruins are 6-4 overall and 2-4 in Trico play. Columbia hosts league leading La Center on Oct. 6 starting at 7 p.m.
