The Big Sky West Division No. 1-seeded Trout Lake High Mustangs (12-1 league, 20-4 overall) won 60-18 over Ione/Arlington to earn third place in the district tournament Feb. 17 at The Dalles High School.
The Mustangs qualified for the state playoffs for a third straight year and they’ll play a first-round road game Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Mohawk (17-8).
In the Mustangs’ win over the Cardinals, junior guard Violette Anderson led three players in double figures with 17 points. Her sister, Eden, followed with a career-high 15 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Emma Patterson had 14 points.
“It feels so good being in the state playoffs and I’m so excited,” Violette Anderson said. “I’ve had so much fun; I love basketball with all my heart, and it’s just been such a great season.”
The No. 15-ranked Mustangs, guided by Coach Dennis Anderson, jumped out to a 14-2 first quarter lead and then they continued to dominate the rest of the contest.
Trout Lake had lost a semifinal home game to Wheeler County, 57-53, which dropped it into the third-place game on Feb. 17.
“This is such a nice group of kids and they’re so hard working and I’m just really proud of them,” said Coach Anderson. “They’re really jelling right now, and this is a good time to come together.
“We had a little disappointment Friday in our loss. It was unexpected and we came out really flat and they (Rattlers) played really hard. It really lit a fire under us though and it helped motivate us to bounce back from a loss.”
The win by the No. 31-ranked Rattlers at Trout Lake High School was fueled by Morgan Cole-Hand, who scored a season-high 23 points.
“They (Rattlers) are good team that really hustled well to get an upset win,” said Violette Anderson, who scored a career-high 39 points. “We came into it expecting to win and so I think we just didn’t have our heads into it like we usually do.”
Rangers lose to Rattlers
The East Division No. 2-seeded Rattlers won 58-38 over the West Division No. 3-seeded Dufur High Rangers (4-9 league, 5-16 overall) in a first-round district playoff crossover contest Feb. 14 at Spray High School to clinch a district semifinal match-up against Trout Lake. The Rangers were in the district playoffs for the first time since 2020.
