It’s that time of year! Students are submitting college applications and considering their options. It’s an exciting and hopeful time, but there is a dark cloud of uncertainty looming on the near horizon. Students and their families are wondering, “Can we afford it?”

Fall registration at Columbia Gorge Community College (CGCC) began July 9 for returning students and July 11 for new students. Classes start Monday, Sept. 24, and the college encourages prospective students to register as early as possible.

It’s not often that a legislator comes face to face with the benefits of the policies he or she has passed into law. I had such an experience last month when I was able to address a room full of students at Columbia Gorge Community College, who are the first cohort of Oregon Promise students in the Gorge.

Students attending Columbia Gorge Community College this fall will see a tuition increase of $6 per credit hour and a new $25 admission fee for registering students as the institution seeks to fill a budget gap of $748,000 for the upcoming year. A number of current fees were also increased.
