Former Hood River Valley High School track and field standout Jestena Mattson was selected to represent the 2022-2023 USA Bobsled National Team at the upcoming World Cup competitions. Mattson ran for the Division 1 Fresno State Bulldogs, where she earned multiple Mountain West conference championships in the heptathlon and pentathlon competitions. Her senior year she was also named to the All-American second team for her performance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

,Track Utilities will be placing underground and aerial fiber optic cable for CenturyLink from Court and Fourth streets to 10th, and along 10th to Emerson street. Work begins Tuesday, July 21 and will continue through July 24. Flaggers will be moving traffic through the work zone, beginning 9 a.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. thereafter, continuing until 5 p.m.

Hood River Area Trail Stewards (HRATS) and Hood River Parks and Recreation organizations are partnering with Velosolutions, an organization focused on pump tracks and trail building, to bring the best site-specific asphalt pump track to the Hood River County community.

Running shoes don’t come cheap these days, and not every high school student has a budget that can cover the cost of new footwear. “I have started a shoe drive where we are asking for anyone with gently used, or new, running shoes laying around, to donate them to benefit the runners at the high school. The shoes we collect would benefit The Dalles High School cross country and track teams,” explained Angela Hanson, whose daughter, Emily Johnson, will be on the school’s cross country team this fall and the track team in the spring.

Asa Farrell and Ezekiel Stelzer picked up two wins apiece, and Makenzie Dunn added a 100-meter run to lead the girls, as the Dufur track team rattled off 14 top-3 outcomes at Saturday’s Arlington Invitational.

The Horizon track team squeezed in another meet in between rain clouds at Hood River Valley High School Wednesday afternoon, competing against primarily HRV junior varsity athletes, along with those from Dufur and Klickitat.
