According to the 2016 Columbia Gorge Regional Health Assessment, nearly 40 percent of adults in the Columbia Gorge have a mental health condition, including drug and alcohol problems. However, talking about these issues can be hard.

An op-ed piece written by Lissa Voorhees and Sandy Moses of Lane County was published, Sept. 11, 2012 by the Eugene Register Guard for Suicide Prevention Week, and was submitted by Susan Gabay of Mosier, a suicide prevention advocate. Her daughter, Susanna, took her own life in 2009 at age 19.

To the editor: When was the last time you asked someone if they were OK? A friend, neighbor, co-worker, family member, someone who seemed pretty down lately, lacking their usual demeanor? If we each did a little more asking and paying as much attention to one’s mental health as we do one’s physical ailments, we could reduce the high rate of suicide.
