When the Dalles Police Sgt. Jeff Halter is acting in his role as a deputy medical examiner at an unattended death, he often has to say there’s no assumption something is criminal just because a police officer is there.
“I end up explaining that a lot to people,” said Halter, who has held that role since the late 1990s. “Just because we’re policemen that doesn’t mean we think you’ve done anything wrong.”v
I want to commend students for exercising their First Amendment rights by voicing their outrage over gun violence in schools and importance of school safety. I want them to know I am listening.
When the police chief heard that the Chronicle would be interviewing retiring The Dalles Police Capt. Steve Baska, the chief’s immediate — and correct — response was, “Oh no!” Baska is famously, delightfully, unfiltered. His 31 years with the city police enabled him to wryly observe, and comment upon, the foibles of humanity.
Detective Sgt. Jamie Carrico, a 22-year veteran of The Dalles Police Department, was named the department’s captain this month. He will replace Capt. Steve Baska, who is retiring in August.
The Oregon State Po lice announced Monday that 25 pounds of cocaine and 44 pounds of methamphetamine had been seized during a Feb. 23 traffic stop on Highway 97 south of Biggs. According to OSP, the estimated street value of the controlled substances is estimated at over $2.3 million.
Wasco County Sheriff Rick Eiesland has given his retirement date—April 30. Speaking to the board of commissioners Wednesday afternoon, Eiesland’s comments were brief. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my job and time here in Wasco County,” he said. “It’s time to let the young guys take over. Things have changed so much. It’s overwhelming.”
A sergeant with the Portland Police Bureau is being charged with second-degree assault of a 17-year-old after an altercation at Elk Meadows RV Park in Trout Lake on July 27.
