To the editor: I thought I could wait out the shutdown and not speak out, but with today’s campaign being announced to “send a brick to Nancy and Chuck” by [President Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign], I cannot keep quiet any longer. I am directly affected by the government shutdown as a furloughed government employee. It is a humiliating and demeaning experience to be treated this way by any employer.
To the editor: With all the talk in the news media, you would think that Congress hasn’t been doing anything since the start of the year. That simply isn’t the case, at least in the House of Representatives.

In the Gorge, we know or have heard about someone that has had or died from breast cancer. Some of us have experienced breast cancer ourselves. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States other than skin cancer. Each week in Oregon and Southwest Washington, 70 men and women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 10 will die.
The Dalles City Council will consider a 2 percent raise for non-union employees at Monday’s regular meeting. Nolan Young, city manager, is recommending approval of the pay increase that will be effective July 1. His staff report states that 33 non-union workers have received a much smaller cost of living adjustment in recent years than 47 employees in two unions.
