Athletes and scholars from Hood River Valley High School and Horizon Christian School are on their way, or fresh back from, state competition in a variety of pursuits. It has been a productive winter for swimmers, wrestlers, skiers, snowboarders, hoopsters, robotics competitors and recitors.

To the editor: We had the privilege of riding behind Queen Jessica Carr of the Arlington Saddle Club at Pendleton’s Westward Ho Parade. I did not speak to her, but wanted to applaud her for showing calm, poise and good horse skills throughout the parade.

I was happy to see the state recognition that Coach Thouvenel received in Sunday's paper. I ran cross country and track for him from 2006 to 2009 and thanks, in part, to his encouragement have been running ever since.

As an eighth-grade teacher at Wy’east Middle School and parent of former WYMS and HRMS students, I’d like to respond to the recent comments about how to make Wy’east Middle school more “appealing” (Our readers write, May 22). Because the question was asked in a way that implies that Wy’east is lacking in appeal, the focus has inevitably been directed on comparisons between Hood River Middle School and Wy’east, reflecting poorly on Wy’east.
