DUFUR – At this point in the season, Dufur girls’ basketball coach Hollie Darden is using this time to get his young team some added experience and learning more about the offensive and defensive sets rather than worrying about wins and losses.

BAKER CITY – In front of a capacity crowd at Baker City High School in the 1A state basketball championship game, the Sherman Huskies fulfilled lifelong aspirations of capturing a 1A state title, their second straight, in a 78-57 victory over Powder Valley.

The Dufur Rangers were a little over two minutes away from a return to Baker City. So close, yet so far. Dufur battled back from a six-point fourth-quarter deficit to take a 52-50 lead with time running out, but Powder Valley ended the game on a 7-0 run to capture a 57-52 victory Friday in a boys’ state first-round hoops contest played in North Powder.

The Horizon girls basketball team (21-5, 13-1 Big Sky District) will enter the second round of the 1A state tournament as an eight-seed and will host No. 9 Powder Valley (20-5, 12-3 Old Oregon League) on Saturday at 6 p.m.

South Wasco county, Dufur and defending 1A state champion Sherman will get an opportunity to show off their skills this week for the Sherman County Basketball Invitational in Moro. With the loss of Brody Myers, Ellis Rager and Travis Hayes, the Redsides have Nick Ward, Haven Stephenson, Ty Herlocker and Skyler Anderson, Keith Kegel and Dawson Herlocker back for coach Jim Hull. “We always look forward to the tournament,” Hull said. “There are always a number of top 1A teams there. It helps show our team what is necessary to compete at a high level for next year.” The Dufur Rangers have a new coach in Ron Townsend overseeing the further development of Connor Uhalde, Ethan Wetherbee, Travis Lucas, Curtis Crawford and a slew of returning freshmen. Sherman coach Bill Blevins has his championship roster intact with Keenan Coles, Max Martin, Treve Martin, Jacob Jusetsen, Kyle Fields, Isaiah Coles and Luke Martin looking to make a repeat run. “If you are a 1A basketball fan, Sherman County is the place to be this week,” Blevins said. “We have some competitive teams from both Oregon and Washington here.” Games run from 4-9 p.m. today in Moro.
