Police lights and sirens sometimes have trouble gaining the attention of today’s distracted drivers. Enter the ultimate un-distractor: the Rumbler. Two new Ford Explorers bought by The Dalles Police Department have the Rumbler, and by late summer, it is anticipated the rest of the police fleet will have Rumblers too, said Police Capt. On June 13, his last day of work before retiring from the Oregon State Police after 31 years, Lt. Pat Shortt decided to hit the road to patrol one more time. “I started this job working on the road and I wanted to end it on the road,” he said.

Charlene Caldwell was killed Thursday afternoon at 1021 E. Ninth St. Her grandson, Garrett Jack Brennan, 25, was arrested and charged with murder and unlawful use of a weapon. An autopsy on Caldwell, who was 71, is set for today, but “it is believed the cause of death is a stab wound,” according to a press release from The Dalles Police Chief Patrick Ashmore.
