Our family recently moved, and as we are getting settled in our new home, I am reminded that cooking in general doesn’t need to be complex. It’s easy to get whipped up, no pun intended, in complicated ingredients and recipes—which I, of course, love.

I remember my grandmother saying, “If we didn’t need food, we’d all be rich!” This may be true. But then, a life without food would be a little less pleasurable. Still, there are so many ways to make great food cheap, make perishable food last and the grocery budget stretch like nobody’s business.

I had this great idea, years ago, to buy a ton of ground beef (OK, more like 10 pounds) and then brown all of it — all at once. That way I could divide it up into 1-pound portions, freeze it and have it all ready to go when a recipe called for ground beef. Great idea! Did it work? Well, sorta’ — if by “working” you mean taking a long time, making a huge mess of my stove and kitchen, and having to do it in batches because who has a frying pan that big — and basically vowing to never do THAT again.

On May 11th, Sherman County residents are invited to bring one pick-up load of trash to the Solid Waste Transfer Station without paying a fee with some exceptions. When: May 11, 2013 – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Where: Sherman County Solid Waste Transfer Site located at 72526 Welk Road between Highway 206 and Biggs Junction. How: Upon arrival wait for the attendant to direct you to the appropriate unloading site. Limited to one trip per vehicle. Restrictions: No household hazardous or medical waste will be accepted.
