When the Valley View Fire (also called the Sunset Valley Fire) was first reported July 1, conditions where reminiscent of those facing firefighters during the Substation Fire of 2018. Both fires started within 1/2 mile of each other, were driven by high winds into dry fuels.

Dufur Gap Road rancher Mike Filbin is relieved that U.S. Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., was successful in his bid to have the federal government allow emergency grazing on some preserve lands. The South Valley Fire came within 15 feet of destroying Filbin’s home and outbuildings last week.

Level three evacuation notices – leave immediately – have been issued to Wasco County residents between Sherers Falls to Mack’s Canyon along the Deschues River due to a grass fire that started Thursday afternoon.

UPDATE: As of 1:36 p.m., the Substation Fire is now estimated at 36,000 acres. Wasco Electric reports that a minimum of 90 power poles have been lost and crews have been working through the night to get new poles up, work that is expected to continue through the weekend. Families in the fire zone southwest of The Dalles are reporting that the Gary Van Orman’s house at 6857 Robert’s Market Road has been destroyed by the fire.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — A highway through the Ochoco Mountains of central Oregon remains closed by a wildfire, but the threat to about 10 scattered homes and ranches eased. Fire officials said Wednesday the Bailey Butte fire — part of the Waterman Complex — had burned more than 2,000 acres west of Mitchell and was moving south into the Ochoco National Forest.
