A strong season for the HRV wrestling team culminated with a handful of podium finishes at the OSAA 5A state wrestling championships held last weekend at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
HRV wrestling received the same place they did last year at the Special District 4 tournament, but this year, the team will be sending even more athletes to the state championship.
The Hood River Valley High School gymnasium was packed to the rafters Friday evening for the HRV varsity wrestling team’s final dual match of the season. The Eagles were unable to pull out a win against the visiting Bend Lava Bears, losing 50-24 against their Special District 4 opponents.
The Hood River Valley High School Athletics Department has released their athletes of the month for December: Noah Wachsmuth and Payton Rigert, representing HRV wrestling, and Marlie Bloomster, representing the HRV girls basketball team.
Hood River wrestlers Jason Shaner, Noah Wachsmuth and Jeremiah Wachsmuth each claimed state wrestling titles over the weekend at the 2014 Oregon State Kids Freestyle and Greco Wrestling Championships. Hood River Middle School seventh-grader Noah Wachsmuth, a defending national champion representing the Portland-based Cobra All-Stars club, went undefeated both days to repeat as freestyle and Greco state champ and claim his fourth straight triple crown.
Representing Hood River Wrestling Club, Jason Shaner won his first state title over the weekend at the Oregon Wrestling Association’s Kids Collegiate State Championships. Shaner, a Hood River Middle School eighth-grader, went 4-0 to claim the title in the 120-pound schoolboy division of the tournament at Parkrose High School.
Five young Hood River wrestlers competed in recent Freestyle and Greco Roman state championships. Leading the way Noah Wachsmuth, who took state titles at 80 pounds in both freestyle and Greco Roman disciplines. The Hood River Middle School sixth-grader went undefeated in nine matches, allowing only three points to be scored against him.
