SALEM — The Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted 2017 sportfishing regulations at its meeting in Salem recently. The majority of the changes are housekeeping corrections building on last year’s effort to simplify the regulations.
COVE (AP) — Less than half a tank of gas will get you from Pendleton to a little-used trail network in the corner of the sprawling Eagle Cap Wilderness where black bears and fast-falling creeks abound.
Wasco and Sherman counties Osprey can be seen nesting along the Columbia River, as well as swallows. The Lower Deschutes River provides ample wildlife viewing opportunities. California Bighorn Sheep are frequently observed in the canyon and can provide fantastic viewing this time of year. The best spot to view sheep is from the BLM access road just downstream and across the river from Sherar’s Falls (along Hwy 216).
Morrow, Gilliam and Wheeler Counties The signs of spring are all here in the Heppner area. Sandhill cranes have been seen heading north for the summer. The official first sign of spring for the Heppner area, a Say’s phoebe has been seen and heard in the area. The earliest of our summer migrants are starting to appear. Long billed curlews can be seen in a few wheat stubble fields. Mobs of ravens can be seen in the foothills as can golden eagles. There are still a few rough-legged hawks in the area and can be seen in the north half of the District. Short-eared owl can be seen along the grasslands of the north end of the District.
Auction and dinner set for Saturday at St. Peter’s Parish Hall The Mule Deer Foundation is coming to town Saturday for a worthwhile fundraiser and auction. Through the many hours and days of work put into the sport, organizer Rich Griffith sees the mule deer population increasing.
